The annual announcement of The Pulitzer Prizes for excellence in journalism were handed out. This national competition, organized by the venerable Columbia School of Journalism, was today won by two very different Seattle news organizations.

The Pulitzer for investigative journalism went to Michael J. Berens and Ken Armstrong of The Seattle Times for a hard-hitting series of reports. Here’s the Pulitzer description: The award was “for their investigation of how a little known governmental body in Washington State moved vulnerable patients from safer pain-control medication to methadone, a cheaper but more dangerous drug, coverage that prompted statewide health warnings.”
At another Seattle news institution, The Stranger, writer Eli Sanders won his award for feature writing for a poignant report about a rape case.  Here’s the Pulitzer citation: “for his haunting story of a woman who survived a brutal attack that took the life of her partner, using the woman’s brave courtroom testimony and the details of the crime to construct a moving narrative.”
Seattle is a rare city, outside New York, with two Pulitzer winners. Congratulations to our hometown winners.
