Swedish Welcomes Six New Doctors to its Growing Medical Staff
SEATTLE – Apr. 21, 2010 – Swedish, one of the region’s largest and most comprehensive non-profit, health-care providers, today announced the addition of Amir L. Bastawrous, M.D., MBA, a colon and rectal surgeon; Izabel R. Belem M.D.,F.A.A.P., a pediatric intensivist; Namou Kim, M.D., a head and neck cancer surgeon; Arthur Lam M.D., a neuroanesthesiologist; Mark Tomski, M.D., a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician; and Suzanne Steinman, M.D., a pediatric orthopedic surgeon. The six doctors join Swedish’s respected medical staff of more than 2,000 providers throughout the region.

DR. AMIR L. BASTAWROUS, who has joined the Swedish Colon and Rectal Clinic, specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the colon, rectum and anus with an emphasis on the surgical management of colorectal cancer, diverticulitis and inflammatory bowel disease. His primary interests include colon, rectal and anal cancer surgery, inflammatory bowel disease surgery, benign anorectal diseases and colonoscopy. He believes in a multidisciplinary team approach to patient care in which the patient, health-care professionals and support personnel work together for the efficient and optimal care of the patient.
Dr. Bastawrous received his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Chicago Hospitals and his fellowship focused on colon and rectal surgery at Cook County Hospital, University of Illinois at Chicago. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery.
DR. IZABEL R. BELEM, a pediatric intensive care specialist, has recently joined Swedish’s team in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. She is focused on providing intensive care for young medical and surgical patients in the 24-bed inpatient unit at Swedish’s First Hill Campus.
Dr. Belem received her medical degree at the Faculdade De Medicina De Campos, Fundacao Benedito Pereira Nunes, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. She previously worked for Presbyterian Hospital, Rady Children’s Hospital and St. Barnabas Medical Center, among others. She is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Board as well as certified in Advanced Trauma Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support.
DR. NAMOU KIM, who has joined Swedish Cancer Institute’s Head and Neck Surgery Clinic, specializes in the diagnosis and management of all head and neck cancers, which include all neoplasms originating from the oral cavity, oropharynx, larynx, thyroid/parathyroid, salivary gland, and skin of the head and neck. He brings with him the most up-to-date surgical expertise, such as minimally invasive trans-oral laser surgery and microvascular reconstructive techniques. Since his arrival at Swedish, he has spearheaded the creation of a multidisciplinary Head and Neck Tumor Board and has been providing care to the most complex and challenging head and neck cancer cases in the region.
Dr. Kim received his medical education at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio in 1998. This was followed by an Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery residency at the same institution. He further completed a head and neck oncologic and microvascular reconstructive surgery fellowship at Mayo Clinic in 2004. Since then, he had been on staff at Mayo Clinic Arizona.
DR. ARTHUR LAM, a neuroanesthesiologist, recently joined Swedish as medical director for neuroanesthesia and neurocritical care after more than 23 years at the University of Washington as the director of the Neuroanesthesia Fellowship Program and the chief of Neuroanesthesia at Harborview. He was anesthesiologist-in-chief (2004-2008), and medical director of the Cerebrovascular Laboratory (2008-2010) at Harborview. He is a member of Physicians Anesthesia Service, a private-practice group of physicians providing anesthesia services at Swedish and other locations throughout the region.
Dr. Lam is focused on the anesthetic and critical care of patients with neurologic disease. He is interested in cerebrovascular physiology and pathophysiology, control of the cerebral circulation, cerebral autoregulation and the influence of anesthetic agents. Dr. Lam received his medical degree from the University of Western Ontario and completed his residency there. He has been asked to speak around the world on issues related to his specialty, has authored many book chapters and professional papers, and is well-known internationally, nationally and locally. Dr. Lam has been voted among the “Best Doctors in Seattle” three times by Seattle Metropolitan and six times by Seattle magazine.
DR. MARK TOMSKI, a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician, recently joined the Swedish Pain and Headache Center. His interests include the full spectrum of rehabilitation services, pain and injury management, work injuries and motor vehicle injuries.
Dr. Tomski received his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin. He completed his residency at Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals and a spinal cord injury fellowship at Zablocki Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Milwaukee, Wis. He is board certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
DR. SUZANNE STEINMAN, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, has joined Swedish Pediatric Specialty Care to provide comprehensive pediatric-musculoskeletal care. Trained in pediatric orthopedics, Dr. Steinman specializes in pediatric hand surgery with special interest in cerebral palsy, congenital hand deformities, neonatal brachial plexus palsy,clubfoot and developmental dysplasia of the hip.
A native of western Washington, Dr. Steinman received her medical degree from the University of Washington School of Medicine and completed her orthopedic surgery residency at the University of California, San Diego. She completed fellowships in pediatric orthopedic surgery and hand surgery at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.
