Portage Bay Cafe Set to Open in South Lake Union

  • Famed University District eatery opens second highly anticipated location with grand opening on May 1

Vulcan Inc. today announced that Portage Bay Café will soon open its doors for business at its newest restaurant location in South Lake Union. The restaurant will occupy approximately 6,000-square-feet of retail space in the Westlake/Terry Building on the southwest corner of Terry Avenue and Harrison Street. The popular breakfast and lunch hotspot will open to the public and welcome its first customers on May 1, 2008.

“We’re excited to be opening in this dynamic, fast-growing urban neighborhood.  South Lake Union’s commitment to sustainability complements our own company values and philosophy, which is one of the key reasons we chose to open our second store in this neighborhood,” said Amy Fair Gunnar, co-owner of Portage Bay Café.  “Our mission is to be local, organic and sustainable in our restaurant business, and we’re pleased to be one of the leaders in this category.”

Co-owned by John Gunnar and wife Amy Fair Gunnar, the new restaurant will continue to follow the environmentally friendly standards established at its University District’s Portage Bay Café by serving up an array of inventive organic and whole food selections at reasonable prices for breakfast and lunch. More than 80 percent of the menu’s ingredients originate from local farmers, producers and ranchers. In addition, the new South Lake Union restaurant will be twice the size of the current University District location, will accommodate a full-service catering business and allow for larger private event functions in the evenings.

“We’re delighted to welcome Portage Bay Café as the latest retailer opening in South Lake Union. Restaurants provide an important amenity for residents and area employees that further enrich the streetscape and contribute to a more dynamic 24-7 urban lifestyle,” said Ada M. Healey, vice president of real estate at Vulcan.

For South Lake Union’s growing number of residents, employees and visitors, Portage Bay Café’s array of tempting breakfast and lunch menu items will be just steps away and is conveniently located directly on the Seattle Streetcar line. During breakfast and brunch, customers can take their organic pancakes and French toast to the famous breakfast bar – a long line of toppings including fruit, nuts, whipped cream and organic maple syrup. Savory choices include a long list of mainly organic omelets, scrambles and benedicts accompanied by organic, herb-roasted red potatoes. Lunch consists of a seasonally-changing menu of locally sourced entrees, salads and sandwiches.

Portage Bay Café will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on weekdays and from 8:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the weekend. For more information, please visit www.portagebaycafe.com.

With the latest addition of Portage Bay Café to a growing list of South Lake Union breakfast, lunch and dinner spots, the neighborhood is fast becoming a destination restaurant and eatery zone. Anchored by Chandler’s Crabhouse and Duke’s Chowder House to the north, Tutta Bella and Whole Foods Market to the south, Southlake Grill and Paddy Coyne’s to the east, and Slo Joe’s BBQ and Great Northwest Soups (now open at the Westlake/Terry Building) to the west, South Lake Union offers 24-hour opportunities to enjoy the best of the northwest lifestyle.
