Two New Retailers to Open in South Lake Union
SEATTLE – December 4, 2007Vulcan Inc. today announced the addition of two new retailers at its Westlake/Terry Building in South Lake Union. Portage Bay Café has leased nearly 6,000 square feet in the development to open its second location in April 2008. Great Northwest Soup Company will open its first store in February 2008, occupying about 1,100 square feet of retail space. “We’re delighted to welcome these diverse new businesses to South Lake Union. Restaurants provide an important amenity for residents and area employees that further enrich the streetscape and contribute to a more dynamic 24-7 urban lifestyle,” said Ada M. Healey, vice president of real estate at Vulcan. Co-owned by John Gunnar and wife Amy Fair Gunnar, Portage Bay Café will open its highly anticipated second location on the southwest corner of Terry Avenue and Harrison Street at the Westlake/Terry Building. Similar to its existing University District locale, the new Portage Bay Café will continue to provide an array of inventive organic and whole food selections at reasonable prices for breakfast and lunch. It will also provide full-service catering and will be open for private functions in the evenings. During breakfast and brunch, Portage Bay Café customers can take their organic pancakes and French toast to the famous breakfast bar – a long line of toppings including fruit, nuts, whipped cream and organic maple syrup. Savory choices include a long list of mainly organic omelets, scrambles and benedicts accompanied by organic, herb-roasted red potatoes. Lunch consists of a seasonally-changing menu of locally sourced entrees, salads and sandwiches. The new location will be open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, please visit www.portagebaycafe.com. “Vulcan’s commitment to sustainability complements our own company values and philosophy, which is one of the key reasons we chose to open our second store in this neighborhood,” said Amy Fair Gunnar, co-owner of Portage Bay Café. “We’re excited to be part of this pioneering urban neighborhood that will continue to attract more retail customers to the area, particularly with the upcoming Seattle Streetcar opening.” After getting its start several years ago making soup for the fishing fleet in Alaska’s Bering Sea, Great Northwest Soup Company will be opening its first public store in February 2008 at the Westlake/Terry Building. Great Northwest Soup Company has leased nearly 1,100 square feet on Westlake Avenue adjacent to Starbucks, and will offer an array of artisan gourmet soups, sandwiches and salads to the growing number of workers and residents in South Lake Union. Full-service catering options will also be available. The store will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and closed on Sunday. The company plans to open additional locations throughout Seattle, Bellevue, Olympia and Tacoma over the next several years.
