VULCAN STARTS WORK ON NEXT
PHASE OF UW MEDICINE LAKE UNION
- Two buildings totaling 284,000 square feet will be home to 700 scientists and employees
SEATTLE, WA – October 25, 2005
Vulcan Inc. has started design and construction planning for the second phase of UW Medicine Lake Union in Seattle's South Lake Union neighborhood.
The second phase will include construction of a 188,000-square-foot laboratory building as well as a 96,000-square-foot office building. Construction will start in May 2006 and occupancy is scheduled for June 2008.
More than 700 scientists and other employees will work at the new buildings.
“UW Medicine is a major anchor in the vibrant research community that is rapidly growing in South Lake Union,” said Ada M. Healey, vice president of real estate for Vulcan. “With other world-class organizations like Seattle Biomedical Research Institute, Rosetta Inpharmatics/Merck, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Group Health in the area, the critical mass allows for tremendous opportunities for collaboration among the science community.”
“The research facilities being developed in South Lake Union for UW Medicine faculty are a critical component in our ability to maintain and further enhance our biomedical research programs,” said Dr. Paul G. Ramsey, vice president for Medical Affairs and dean of the School of Medicine. “We are excited about the opportunity these new facilities will provide for significant advances in our ability to understand, treat, and ultimately prevent a variety of diseases.”
The two buildings will be located on the south and west portions of the block surrounded by 8th Avenue North, Republican Street, 9th Avenue North and Mercer Street.
The project team for the second phase includes:
- Architect: MBT Architecture

- General Contractor: Sellen Construction

- Structural Engineer: Magnusson Klemencic Associates

- Electrical & Mechanical Engineer: Affiliated Engineers NW

- Civil Engineer: Coughlin Porter Lundeen

- Landscape Architect: Gustafson Guthrie Nichol Ltd.
The first phase of the UW's research hub is located on the north end of the same block. Nearly 300 researchers and employees work at that building, which has been open since January. Vulcan renovated the facility for the UW and research groups there include teams investigating cardiovascular disease and tissue regeneration, cancer vaccines and other methods of preventing and treating women's cancers, and inflammation.
The UW School of Medicine faculty ranks second among all medical schools in the U.S. in research funding.
Vulcan Inc., which owns approximately 60 acres in Seattle's South Lake Union neighborhood, has delivered 650,000 square feet of new developments in the past two years. Nearly 900,000 square feet is under development in 2005 and another 2.1 million square feet is in the development pipeline. Vulcan's vision for the area is to partner with the community to encourage a vibrant, diverse neighborhood that blends housing, retail, office, life sciences research, open space and public transportation.
