Hungary is first in Europe to equip all police vehicles with life-saving AEDs as standard equipment

  • Hungarian National Police to Deploy Cardiac Science Powerheart® AEDs in its Fleet of Vehicles

BOTHELL, WA - January 13, 2006
Cardiac Science Corporation (NASDAQ: CSCX), a global leader in advanced cardiac monitoring and defibrillation products, today announced that the Hungarian National Police Department has selected its Powerheart® automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for deployment in all of its police vehicles.

Under the terms of the agreement, 400 Powerheart® AEDs will be supplied to the Hungarian National Police via Budapest-based Innomed Medical Co., Cardiac Science's exclusive distributor in Hungary. To date, 25 AED units have already been installed in Hungary's police vehicles.   The remainder of AEDs will be deployed early this year.

Dr. Major General Jozsef Hatala, director of public safety for the Hungarian National Police Department, said, "The public benefits of installing Cardiac Science's life-saving AEDs as standard equipment in all of our police vehicles is undeniable and a major step forward in our efforts to better protect our citizens. We're proud to be the first police department in Europe that will have access to these crucial AEDs at our fingertips."

"This agreement to improve accessibility of AEDs within Hungary illustrates our commitment to deliver innovative technology that protects hearts and saves lives," said John Hinson, chief executive officer of Cardiac Science.   "The deployment also demonstrates the reach of our global distribution network and our capability to provide excellent installation support in international locations."

The use of a defibrillator to shock the heart back into normal rhythm combined with CPR is the only effective treatment of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), and early defibrillation has been clinically proven to be the single greatest determinant of survival for a SCA victim. According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, defibrillation therapy delivered within the first few minutes of SCA can save up to 74 percent of victims.

Driven by an increasing awareness of the benefits from AED placements in both public and private facilities, the AED market is one of the fastest-growing medical device markets. Growing at an estimated rate of approximately 20 percent per year, it is believed that the world market for AEDs will nearly triple and reach $1 billion by the end of the decade, according to market research firm Frost & Sullivan.
