Virginia Mason (VM) is one of Seattle’s leading private, non-profit medical centers.

Situation

• Virginia Mason was preparing to demolish a building and break ground on a new addition to its main hospital.
• Through a long and sometimes contentious process, the project had created dissention within the
  First Hill community.

Solution

• Developed a public affairs and community outreach program that would help VM address community needs and improve VM’s reputation with First Hill stakeholders and neighbors. 
• Conducted forums where VM and neighbors could engage in dialogue, present information and have
  questions answered.
• Created a sounding board consisting of key First Hill leaders to build credibility and trust.

Results

• Re-engaged community members and opened doors to positive dialogue.
• Regular outreach to residents culminated in a well-received open house and reception.
