Build the Streetcar is a non-profit organization that supported the creation of a streetcar to connect the South Lake Union, Denny Triangle and Downtown Seattle neighborhoods.
Situation
- Build a Streetcar wanted to gather property owners, businesses and community groups to support a transit solution connecting South Lake Union to the city’s downtown core.
Solution
- Launched an aggressive campaign that that included coalition building, message development, media and community relations, campaign management, government relations and fundraising.
- Focused on meeting the neighborhood’s transit needs and spurring economic development.
Results
- Through intense outreach and lobbying, the streetcar project advanced from little to near-unanimous City Council support.
- Media and community relations resulted in changing the perception of the project from an amenity to a transit solution for three growing communities.
- The South Lake Union line opened to the public in 2007.
