Media Monday: Chelsea Lin

Olivia Fuller / January 23, 2017

For this week’s Media Monday, we’d like you to meet Chelsea Lin, Food and Dining Editor at Seattle magazine.

Chelsea Lin

  1. How did you find yourself at Seattle magazine?

I’ve been working with them as a freelancer for the last couple of years, so when Jessica (the previous food editor) moved back to California in September, they came to me. It’s been an easy transition since I knew everyone already!

2. Which of your stories are you most proud of?

Stay tuned for March’s issue!

3. What is your favorite thing about your job?

What’s not to love? I most enjoy being able to uncover and share the more obscure little hidden gems, both with readers and with my friends.

4. What is your interview style?

I like to prepare, but I also think it’s really valuable to just see where the conversation takes you.

5. What do you look for in a story?

Seattle magazine always wants to know why a story is relevant right now. What does it say about our city? I think finding that really relevant hook is important when we talk about food and new restaurants, too.

6. What is your day like at your job?

I work part-time and mostly from home, so there’s nothing typical about any day.

7. Who do you most look up to in the journalism industry?

That’s a tough question… I first fell in love with food journalism specifically reading Ruth Reichl’s work, because of the story element to her recipes and reviews.

8. What is your favorite news outlet?

I don’t get through nearly as many magazines as I have subscriptions to, but I love Saveur and Vanity Fair, with a little Bon Appetit as dessert because it’s fluffier.

9. Fill in the blank:

  • If I am not reporting, I am… Eating, or chasing my kids.
  • If I could interview anyone, it would be… Christina Tosi at Milk Bar.
  • My favorite thing about Seattle is… The coffee? Haha…

10. What is your guilty pleasure?

Ooh, probably that amazing chocolate chip cookie from Met Market. I don’t shop there usually because I can’t go in without getting one.
